Three programs that serve adults with developmental disabilities were chosen to participate in Outside Sound because of their reputations for excellent art programming. Developmental disabilities can include Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, Schizophrenia, blindness, hearing impairment or any combination of these and other afflictions. Often these mental illnesses are accompanied by physical impairments or limitations. Each program is run by a staff of passionate artists and caregivers who help to provide the handicapped participants with much more than just art training: attention, assistance, and an open social environment are among the most important. All three programs are managed by the organization Resources for Human Development (RHD). RHD is a diversified human services nonprofit that offers programs that address intellectual and developmental disabilities, behavioral health, homelessness, addiction recovery and more – there are currently more than 160 programs in 14 states.
