The McKnight Foundation has awarded it’s annual “Visiting Composers Residency” to Paul Giess and Outside Sound! This is the second time that McKnight and American Composers Forum have chosen to bring Outside Sound to the greater Minneapolis area. We are honored and appreciative of this great opportunity. Learn more about Paul’s current work and the program at his blog page:
Outside Sound musician Paul Giess has done amazing music work at Center for Creative Works – our partnering art program for 6+ years at this point. Most recently, Paul has developed, recorded and catalogued new music with CCW artists to create the program’s own Bandcamp page. Thanks to the wonderful non-profit music education organization Musicopia, Outside Sound has held numerous workshops and assemblies at local schools. In the last 6 months we’ve visited schools including The Pathway School, George Crothers Memorial School, and Elwynn Opportunties. It’s great to involve students in hands-on music work, but also to share what our project is about and demonstrate the many ways in which music connects people!
The Outside Sound Ensemble got the chance to perform at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in early October, thanks to Homer Jackson and the folks at Philadelphia Jazz Project . We look forward to sharing some great video and audio from the performance in due time. We will be working on some new collages and music for this coming spring so stay tuned!
I’m very excited to announce that Outside Sound will be performing/presenting as part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s prestigious “Art After 5” series on Friday May 27th at 5pm. We will be playing compositions set to visual collages of artwork, as well as some new compositions that have not yet been heard. Please consider attending and bringing a friend. It is free with admission to the museum and, speaking from experience, it is a very nice way to spend a Friday night. More info at http://www.philamuseum.org/artafter5
Bandcamp is a great way for artists to share their music and now Outside Sound can be found there! It is a great, easy way for people to stream, download or purchase the music that has been created through the project. Check it out here: outsidesoundproject.bandcamp.com
In September, Outside Sound was featured on WHYY’s NewsWorks Tonight program here in the Philadelphia area. You can hear the piece here, done by Alex Lewis:
With our Sept event only 2 months away, Outside Sound is in full preparation mode. We will be completing a new recording within the next month and are excited to share new music, new artwork, and our unique visual collages. Updates on tickets to come ASAP!
We are happy to announce that the next OS public concert/gallery event will take place at the Free Library of Philadelphia (1901 Vine St.) on Sept. 16, 2015 at 6:30pm! This will be a very special evening to say the least. It will be the first OS event in Philadelphia (where the project started) since April of 2013 and we are using the opportunity to premiere a whole program of new music and unreleased art collages. We are also partnering with our friends from Center for Creative Works and (for the first time) with SpArc Philadelphia – two important art programs serving adults with disabilities in the Philadelphia area. More information to come. We have another event in the works, an open house music day at Center for Creative Works that will happen in late August or early September…check back soon for date and time.
This just in…American Composers Forum has awarded new funding to Outside Sound! ACF has supported the project before and we are humbled to have their recognition and help. The funding will be used for upcoming activities and events later in 2015. Stay tuned for more information! In the meantime, please take some time to read about ACF and maybe to pass along their website to any musicians who may be interested: ACF
